MAP Markus Ambach Projekte

MAP MARKUS AMBACH PROJEKTE considers itself to be an independent artist-generated platform for projects that cover an extensive range of interests. Its main emphasis is twofold: on the one hand it
is interested in the discourses, productions, and debates in the sphere of art and public urban space, which manifest themselves in projects in public space but also in collaborations with museums, societies for the promotion of the fine arts, cities, and institutions that deal with urban development. On the other hand, it specifically focuses on projects that deal with the various representations of nature in an urban context, including the development of projects in green public spaces such as gardens, parks, and zoological gardens but also topical exhibitions and group exhibitions.

MAP fosters concepts related to urban space, which blend theoretical approaches and factual working methods to inscribe artistic manifestations into public urban space in a direct and politically effective manner. Its projects are generated contextually at specific sites in direct dialogue between artists, theoreticians, architects, planners, scientists, local protagonists, and other sectors of society.
Markus Ambach has initiated, authored, and organized exhibitions and projects such as stadtraum.org, wg|3zi|k|b, wildlife, Parcours Interdit, Public Garden Public Generation, Das uneingelöste Versprechen, local to local, The Chain and B1|A40 The Beauty of the Grand Road.

MAP is more or less a platform to genertate projects with various partners, always adapting its structures and strategies to the specific context, places and themes. Within that it is not the aim of MAP to subsummize others under its title, which means, that normally the name of the project like “B1|A40 The Beauty of the grand road” (in coop. with Cultural Capital of Europe Ruhr.2010 and the town of Bochum), “Das uneingelöste Versprechen” (In Collaboration with the “Kunstverein für die Rheinlande und Westfalen”), “Public garden public generation” (in Collaboration with NAK Neuer Aachener Kunstverein), “WG/3ZI/K/B” (with Birgit Jensen and Künstlerverein Malkasten), “stadtraum.org” (with Andrea Knobloch) or “parcours interdit” is communicated.

Within that the projects turn out as project rooms, gardens, discursive spaces, exhibithions in and out of institutions, in public space, along motorways, in private rooms, as guided tours and citywalks, artist clubs, researches, publications etc., always adapting the structure to what is needed to access a certain context in a most promising way.

MAP would like to be understood as a grid or bigger focus, that puts the various contents of the projects – all dealing with specific typologies of public and semi- public spaces and issues – into a relation of neighbourhoods, that would comment each other, connect or establish distances, communicate, ignorate or denie. MAP would be the platform, on which these neighbourhoods could be discussed or discuss with each other. Within that MAP has no aim to cutrate in a classic way, but to open certain kinds of spaces and establish specific climates for artists, scientists, townplanners and the members of society to work in for a while. Specific climates, that develop directly out of specific contexts and offer specific possibilities of confrontation. MAP would understand itself as a structure, that approaches a topic by knowledge, intuition and research to enable others to work on it and produce real effects in real sites for real places.

Within that the organisational structure is always composed new with each upcoming project. A team of 3 persons is the inner, steady organisation. Markus Ambach is initiator and author of the most projects, but often in cooperation with others. Sometimes (like in B1|A40) there are lots of partners, who influence the outcome, which would be a mayor target of MAP. The outcome or result would always be something, that is developed straight between all partners. In this sense MAP only produces the set, the climate or the plot, where most of the things are left open: the project designs itself along the qualities of the space and the protagonists in an autoproductive way. Round about six to ten projects and exhibitions take place every year.
