URBAN PLANNING – BOTTOM-UP OR TOP-DOWN? WHO MANAGES THE CITY?

Metropolises exercise a magnetic attraction over people. While in 1900 one out of ten citizens lived in a city, by 2050 it will be three out of four. Europe also faces growing pressure to meet growing housing needs as quickly as possible. How to revive vacant buildings, develop districts or share the living space? These are the questions facing urban planning and policy in our time. But how can we achieve greater acceptance among heterogeneous communities of the new challenges of living together? What qualities does modern city planning require to be flexible enough to encompass the interests of all the residents? How can existing top-down strategies be successfully complemented by bottom-up strategy approaches?

During the Alpbach Built Environment Symposium experts from science, administration and society focus on new projects and ideas which are already providing the answers to how to manage increasing housing needs in urban environments. Hear new concepts and examples which show how sustainable and socially acceptable urban structures can be developed in cooperation with local residents.
